Reiki is an invisible, subtle energy. The name
"Reiki" is Japanese and can be translated as "universal life energy".
It originated in Tibet and was referred to in Sanskrit writings some 2500 years ago. Dr
Mikao Usui rediscovered and developed this tradition in the late 1800s.
Reiki uses this universal life energy to stimulate
the body in its own natural healing process, increasing the energy flow throughout the
whole body. It is transferred with the practitioners hands resting gently on the clients
body.
A Reiki treatment is non-diagnostic,
non-interventionist, non-manipulative and no pressure is applied. Clothes are not removed
as the energy will pass easily through them. A treatment is usually carried out with the
recipient lying down or sitting in a relaxing environment and, on average, lasts about an
hour.
A recipient may experience a wide range of
sensations such as gentle tingling, heat or cold. At times there may be a release of
emotion as part of the rebalancing process, and this is considered very healthy.
A deep sense of calm and peace is often
experienced. A very welcome addition to our understanding of life.
